XFree86 Trials and Tribulations
Ever since I installed Fedora Core 1 onto my workstation at my apartment I have been wanting to get my dual display working just like I have it in Windows XP. It seems that getting it to work correctly in X is like getting a root canal. I’ve been hacking at it for the past week–trying just about every way to configure XF86Config that is out there, I even got the latest 4.3.0 CVS. X still would not load dual screens. It appeared to try to come up on two displays, but only one screen would display showing half the desktop
The problem is that I have an ATI Radeon 9600 Pro and DRI drivers for X have not been developed for it yet, of which I only found out about last night. So in order to get back to dual screen bliss I’m going to have to replace my Radeon with a card that is currently supported by the DRI project. I have heard good things about Matrox cards so I’ve decided to purchase a G550. It should be in early next week and I’ll post an update on how things work out. Having been using dual heads for a single large desktop for so long, working on just one is really a drag.
