Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow
Bye-bye Lotus Notes, its been a wonderful 7 years. The new qmail based system is finally ready to serve; built and tested in two weeks. A fairly long time to roll out a new email system, but considering all the other things I have to take care of, and all of the interruptions, throughout the day two weeks is not too bad. What took the longest was finding an IMAP daemon that has all the features we are needing, and I looked at them all. Courier-IMAP, UW-IMAP, bincimap, and Dovecot. I settled on bincimap mainly due to its ability to run under ucspi-tcp tools and heavy developer support.
The interesting part of the migration has yet to come. How do you copy messages from an antiquated proprietary email system to a completely different platform? Good question, but I’m going to give fetchmail a try. I’ve been reading its documentation, faqs, and how-tos for the past day and I’m 90% sure it is the right tool for the job. What about the other 10%? Well we’ll just have to see how it turns out Monday morning.
