Wardriving on local news

Here’s my take on the news report of “hackers” going around town with this new “21st century mischief.” If you missed the telecast I encoded it and it is available in the downloads section of this site. (registration required)

Yet once again the media shows hackers as theives, and criminals, but that’s a whole different story. I’ll admit that I do wardrive around town here in Midland, TX. I do it as a hobby, why would I want to crack into someone’s wifi network when I have my own high-speed access to the Internet from home and work? This newscast provides basically worthless information to the general public, I feel that they may have dummed it down too much leaving people confused.

Remember I do this as a hobby, something to do that gets me out into the sun and fresh air. Using peoples/organizations WAPs without their permission is illegal. I just go around town looking for bone head sysadmins who leave their WAPs open. The world is full of bad sysadmins who need to be taught a lesson. What ISPs, corporations and users should be concentrating on is providing free WiFi to the public…

Just my two cents worth.
