No Carrier

A few weeks ago the company’s ISP switched their upstream backbone connection to the Internet. They “said” things would go smoothly and we wouldn’t notice any down time since the switch would be done at 2am in the morning. Needless to say the morning they did the switch things didn’t go as they had planned. In all we were down from 2am that morning till about 10am, with plenty of calls from users local and remote. Too bad we do not have a service level agreement, or we would have been getting a nice refund for all of that down time. Hopefully that situation will change very soon.

To get a visual feeling of the outage this is what normal traffic out of the office looks like:
Normal Normal

And this is what it looked like the morning of the outage:
Dead

Once our ISP fixed their problem all was back to normal and the phone calls subsided. If all goes according to plans we will soon switch to a different ISP that will provide and honor SLAs, but that’s a whole different post–more to come soon.
