Shark Tank Thursday!
Why can’t all job interviews go like this one did?
Shark Tank: If you can do that, we’ll trust you for the rest
This pilot fish is a nurse and educator, and she loves computers. What she doesn’t love is all the traveling she has to do in her job with a health care IT supplier.
“So I opted to try for a job where they were looking for a hospital educator with some proficiency in computers,” fish says.
For the job interview, the interviewer wants to see fish’s curriculum file. Not a problem — it’s all on her laptop. So she totes that with her down to the meeting.
“Is that little bag all you have?” interviewer asks fish.
Yes, fish explains, her curriculum file is on the laptop. Anything the interviewer wants, she can print out, or she can e-mail an electronic copy.
“I had to explain this a couple times in very simple language,” says fish. “They decided that even though they couldn’t figure out how I’d managed the feat, they’d take me up for the second interview with the hiring manager.”
The hiring manager has the same question: “Where’s the curriculum file?”
It’s on the laptop, fish says.
“You mean to tell me that you put your entire curriculum file on a computer?” asks incredulous hiring manager.
Sure, says fish. I’ll just boot up and show you.
“Never mind,” hiring manager says. “You’re hired!”
