Gentoo inside

So I decided my first project w/ VMware would be to install gentoo and start learning how to use that distribution. For one thing it helps if I could learn how to type correctly or at least check for typos before rebooting into a new kernel. As I type this gentoo’s emerge is building the gnome desktop environment–it has been at it since 9:30 this morning. Emerge looks to be a really interesting app. Which begs the questions: Which came first yum, or emerge? I’ll post up the result of the gnome build as soon as it’s finished, which hopefully be soon now.

  1. Emerge came way before yum. I believe the auto dependency solving apps go in this historical order:

    apt-get
    emerge
    yum
